World Juniors Update: End of Round Robin

The round robin period of the tournament ended Friday with a few surprises.

The USA defeated Germany 4-0 and scored a close 2-1 win over the Swiss to finish with 11 points and a bye atop Pool A. Finland’s 6-0 win over the Slovaks got them second place, and the Swiss take 3rd on the basis of 2 wins over German and Slovakia. Slovakia and Germany round out the Pool and miss the medal round.

In Pool B, the showdown between Sweden and Canada ended in a 6-5 shootout victory for a determined Swedish team. Despite 28 goals scored, Canada takes second place. Russia, on the strength of an 8-0 win over Norway and 8-2 win over Czech Republic, snagged 3rd. Czechs and Norway will face the relegation rounds.

Brayden Schenn sits atop the scoring race with 7 goals and 7 assists. Ryan Ellis of Canada and Dmitri Orlov are  next on 8 points each.

Sweden and USA get byes in the semis. Canada will take on Switzerland for the right to play the Americans, while old rivals Russia and Finland will play to see who will face the Swedes.
