Red Wings Sweep Coyotes in Round 1
The Detroit Red Wings looked dominant, sweeping the Phoenix Coyotes out of the playoffs and possibly out of the desert with a 6-3 victory Wednesday night.
“We knew they were going to come out and play with their best effort and I thought they did, but we really wanted to win tonight,” said perennial Norris trophy candidate and Red Wings defenseman Nick Lidstrom.
Phoenix had no answer for the Detroit Red Wings, especially in the third period, and was swept out of the playoffs for the first time since 1987 – nine years before the franchise moved from Winnipeg. The Coyotes saluted the crowd at center ice after the game as most of the fans stayed to watch, but now head into the offseason unsure if they’ll ever play in the desert again.
